A few weeks ago my coworker Justin randomly decided he would do an animal products only diet, to balance out my vegan diet. He lost 4 pounds on the diet. Without many options left to me, I decided to do the same thing.

The Diet:

To only consume food which comes from animals. This is meat, fish, eggs, milk, and cheese. Technically also included would be honey and gelatin. That's it, no vegetables, no fiber. Nothing more:

The Experience:

I don't believe it is a well kept secret that I am not fan of low carb diets. My body relies on carbohyrates, whithout them it does not function. This week was no exception.

It was initially refreshing to have the option of milk and cheese. I started drinking quite a bit of milk, much more than I normally have (which is usually closest described as none). I also consumed a few blocks of cheese including cheddar, swiss, and mozzarella. The sudden onset of dairy had a consequence though, as I started to become sick to my stomach for several hours at a time.

Towards the end of the week I was expected to not only teach my normal class at the community college, but to also teach an Aikido class Thursday evening in a park. Wednesday in particular I was quite exhausted, and I staggered through work and had to really push myself to complete my evening workout. I was experiencing the classic extreme fatigue which always comes to me on a low carb diet.

To combat this Wednesday evening, in addition to an egg, ham, and cheese omelet, I also ate the three multigrain pancakes which came with it. Thursday I purchased a half gallon of chocolate milk and drank about a quart of it throughout the day and finished it on Friday. Additionally I had a Greek salad for lunch. I was still quite tired for my Friday class, and I was definitely struggling to focus 100% of the time.

Friday evening I purchased some cured meat and cheese, and I consumed that in the evening and all throughout Saturday. That evening I also came home with some chocolate milk, because I had become addicted, and drank several glasses worth. I believe I consumed less than a full gallon of chocolate milk in those three days.

The Results:

Wednesday morning I was 3 pounds down, and I was optimistic about staying at that level. Unfortunately due to my shameful chocolate milk addiction I was only down half a pound by the end of the week, which is to say I am still about half a pound more than I had been a few weeks ago. A couple of things could have contributed to this, I worked out a little harder and a little more, maybe I built a little bit of muscle, on the other hand, I did indulge a little too much in chocolate milk the last couple of days, and maybe I just acquired a little more fat.
