Tie: What kind of price range are you looking at for a car?
Gal: I don't want to spend more than $25,000 on a car.
Tie: Great! I can show you 8 cars all at $25,000.

Related Comics: Part 1, Part 2

The first comic is basically true, although I was the sad car buyer, not a lady. It took quite a bit of convincing for the salesman to let me try a dreadful civic coupe. My friend Sam says it was because I told the man I wanted a used car.

When I was looking for a car I noticed that car salesmen have no interest in actually selling me a car. A few times I would go to a dealership and wander around looking at cars for 20 - 30 minutes, without anyone talking to me. I had to seek out the salesmen, and they begrudgingly would show me a few cars.

It is often a mistake to tell a salesman of any trade your top price. Recently my mother was looking at houses, and every house she saw was $200,000. I asked her why that is, and she replied it was because they told the realor their high price was $200,000. Hard to believe that is all they were shone.

I recently started looking at properties to by for myself as well. I saw one location that was around $150,000, afterwards the agent sent me a list of other properties all $155,000 - $175,000, even though I told him that $150,000 was my top mark. Going forward I think I will tell people I am in the $125,000 range.
